Before assisting a person, who has fallen, follow your facility's post fall protocol.
After the person has been examined by the proper authority, and deemed okay to be lifted, explain to the patient how you are going to get them back on their feet.
Step 1:
While the patient is lying down on their back have them raise their knees so the caregiver can position the Helping Handles under the buttocks (NOT THE THIGHS.)
Step 2:
When the Helping Handles are in place, have the patient straighten their legs flat on the floor, then raise them to a seated position.
Step 3:
The caregiver on the right side of the patient will hold the Helping Handle on the caregiver's right side. The caregiver will then squat down, and grab the Helping Handle that’s under the patient's buttocks with their right hand, palm facing away from the patient, and use their left hand to hold the patient's right triceps.
Step 4:
The caregiver on the left side of the patient will have the patient hold the Helping Handle on the caregiver's left side. The caregiver will then squat down, and grab the Helping Handle that’s under the patient's buttocks with their left hand, palm facing away from the patient, and use their right hand to hold the patient's left triceps.
Step 5:
Caregivers will then get in a squatted position, bending their knees, keeping their backs straight, and creating eye contact with each other. While maintaining eye contact, initiate verbal communication to ensure staying in unison. Once both caregivers are ready, they both lift standing straight up, at the same time while keeping their backs straight. Be sure to be slow and smooth, not jerky.
*If the caregivers are unable to lift the patient, then a Hoyer lift is required.
